The lively resort of Kassiopi, on the north-east coast has a charming harbour with a wide variety of tavernas, cafes and bars. This busy fishing village has long been a popular holiday destinations for all nationalities; the Emperor Tiberius had a villa here and Nero is said to have visited the Temple to Zeus, now covered by a 16th-century church. Sadly, the only evidence of this illustrious history is the forlorn ruins of the medieval Angevin castle overlooking the village from its headland.
Today Kassiopi is still popular with visitors and yet has kept much of its original charm. The main street, which leads to the harbour, is lined with restaurants, cafes, tavernas and bars that offer a selection of meals from simple traditional Greek food to international cuisine. However, tucked in between are lovely kafenions, where the local men gather in the mornings and late afternoons.
Hidden below the castle and the opposite headland are idyllic pebbly beaches and rocky coves. These are perfect for just stretching out under the sun or for snorkeling in the clear, blue sea. By night the harbour sparkles with the lights from the bobbing fishing boats, creating a wonderland for diners in the many waterfront tavernas. If you want to explore the island further or even venture to another Ionian island, there are day trips that leave from Kassiopi. Or why not explore the coves and stunning bays in your own boat?
